The town of Dharwad in North Karnataka is synonymous with pedhas the world over. We bring you the 'original' Dharwad Pedha. When Shri Ram Ratan Singh Thakur fled the dreaded plague in early 19th century Uttar Pradesh, little did he know that he would put his new home in Dharwad on the culinary map of the world.
The pedhas that he made and sold became so popular that the street on which the shop stands came to be known as Line Bazaar- easily identified by the every present queue of people waiting to make a purchase. His grandson Babusingh Thakur would make it his life's mission to get this culinary treasure, national and international recognition. The much awarded pedha, from the Lord Willingdon Medal in 1913 to the Priyadarshini Indira Gandhi Award in 2001 and 2013 and the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award in 2002 and 2013, is today an intrinsic part of the history, culture and traditions of our country. Bring home a piece of it today.
