Tirunelveli is a city in Tamil Nadu. The city is located on the west bank of the Thamirabarani River and its twin city, Palayamkottai, is on the east bank. Tirunelveli is believed to be an ancient settlement and the name is a combination of three Tamil words Tiru, Nel, veli which means sacred paddy hedge.
There is an interesting story about the name. It is said that Lord Shiva came down in the form of a hedge and a roof to protect his ardent devotees’ paddy field.
