Method to make Tasty Sambhar with Saras Sambhar Powder
Toovar Dal - 100g
8 sambhar onions (if not available use one large red onion) Tamarind – about 25g (1 big lime size) Okra (ladies finger/Bhindi) -8 nos ( and/or may also add drumsticks, brinjal (eggplant) or other vegetables of your choice) Green chilies – 2 Nos. Tomatoes – 2 Nos. Coriander leaves - a few Curry leaves - a few Dry chilli - 1 Mustard quarter teaspoon Refined oil for seasoning Saras Sambhar powder 3 level Table spoons.
Tamarind juice – Soak de-seeded or seedless tamarind in water for 15 mins. Squeeze and strain the pulp. Discard pulp
Cut Big Onion (if being used instead of small onion) into thin slices Cut ladies' fingers or vegetables Cut Green Chilies into thin strips Cut tomatoes into big pieces
Cooking Procedure :-
In three glasses of water cook the dal. When cooked add ladies' fingers and/or vegetables of choice, green chilies and tomatoes and cook for 2 more minutes. Then add the strained tamarind juice, Saras Sambhar powder and salt (as per taste). Simmer on low flame till vegetables are completely cooked.
Add coriander leaves. In a separate vessel heat oil, add the mustard. When it splutters add the red chillies. Add this hot flavoured oil to the dal mixture Lastly garnish with a handful of cilantro/fresh coriander leaves and serve your delicious sambhar.
